yesterday night I installed the macOS Catalina 10.15.5 update. emacs has a special mode for running SML code, but is less new-user-friendly. This is after upgrading the machine to Catalina, updating Xcode, reinstalling XQuartz. Atom and VSCode allow you to run a terminal inside of the editor, so you can run smlnj in there.
